Background: Phase 1
Galvanized by high levels of obesity, dangerous biking conditions, poor air quality, and significant gaps in the bicycle network, BikeSGV began educating community members, decision makers and stakeholders about the benefits of a bike-friendly San Gabriel Valley. In 2012, BikeSGV partnered with Day One and five cities - Monterey Park, San Gabriel, Baldwin Park, El Monte, and South El Monte - to develop a regional bicycle master plan in the San Gabriel Valley.
In January 2013, Day One was awarded a $475,000 grant for 3.25 years through the Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) Initiative of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, PLACE Program (Policies for Livable, Active Communities and Environments). Funding for the HEAL Initiative was made possible by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS’s) Community Transformation Grants (CTG) initiative.
Although the project was cut short after less than 24 months due to Congressional budget cuts to the Affordable Care Act's "Prevention Fund", project partners were able to successfully complete the most significant plan task ahead of schedule: the development of 5 city-level bicycle plan.
