Bicycle Facilities 101

Are you confused about the many different types of bicycle facilities? Don't know the difference between a Class-I, II, III, protected bike lanes, bike routes, bikeways, etc?  This page has been created to help you understand the basics of bicycle infrastructure. 

The Streets and Highway Code Section 890.4 defines a "Bikeway" as a facility that is provided primarily for bicycle travel.

Class-I Bike Path

Provides a completely separated right of way for the exclusive use of bicycles and pedestrians with crossflow by motorists minimized. 

Class-II Bike Lane

Provides a striped lane for one-way bike travel on a street or highway.

Class-III Bike Route

Provides for shared use with pedestrian or motor vehicle traffic.
